Audiology/Otolaryngology/permanent T tubes

Question
I have a t tube that was put in about 10 years ago.  Since Oct. my ear has plugged up 4 times.  It is not infected and my general physician cannot see anything out of the ordinary.  Can the tube malfunction after a period of time?

Answer
Hi Tracy,
Yes...a tube can malfunction.  That is usually due to a blockage with debris, wax, blood, fluid...etc.  You GP is not equipped to properly inspect the tube.  An ENT will use a special microscope to look into the tube to determine if there is a blockage.  If there is, he will be able to suction and clean it out.  However, if there is another reason for the tube to not be working, or for your ear to be plugged up, the ENT will also be able to diagnose that.

Hope this helps.
