Audiology/Otolaryngology/Water in ear after myringotomy

Question
Dear Dr. Jacobster,
My son (17 months old) had a myringotomy procedure about a week and half ago.  While I was giving him a bath, a small amount of water got into his ear.  I panicked.  I immediately dried it out with Q-tips, but I'm afraid it's too late.  His post-op appointment isn't for another 3 days.  Is there something I should be looking out before until then?  Do you think the water will cause any damage or infections?  Should I use the antibiotic ear drops as a precautionary measure?  Thanks, I'm just worried and I'm mad that they didn't give us ear plugs after the surgery to use for baths.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Katie,
I understand your concern. A little bit of water, for example, as in a splash, will probably not do any damage.  However, if his head was submerged, that would be cause for concern.

When you see your doctor, he will check your son's ear.  I also strongly suggest that you get a set of earplugs made - many audiologists actually make them in the office. If you cannot get the plugs immediately, you can go to a sports store and buy a neoprene headband that goes around the ears.  This is used by swimmers and helps to keep water out of the ears.

Hope this helps.
