Question
I have consant ringing and humming in my ears, they also feel like they need to pop all the time. My nose feels stuffy and runs alot, there is a lot of flem. I have never had allergies before, could this be a sign?

Answer
Hi Rhonda,
From the symptoms you describe, it does sound as if you are having Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD).  The ET is a small tube that connects the middle ear to the nasal cavity and is responsible for pressure equalization.  Ever notice when you have a cold in your nose, your ears stuff up?  When the nasal membranes swell up, say from a cold or allergies, the ET may also swell, or be blocked by the swelling of the membranes.  Many times, treating the underlying cause will fix the ETD.

So, my advice, is to see a physician.  Usually they will start with nasal sprays to shrink the membranes.  If that doesn't work, then further testing, which may include allergy and audiological testing, may be necessary.

Hope this helps.
