Audiology/Otolaryngology/Hearing Aids

Question
Would you suggest seeing an Otolaryngolist before being tested by an audiologist for hearing aids?  I am currently wearing hearing aids that I feel need to be replaced because of new technology.  Can you suggest the best way to proceed?

Thank you so much for any information you can give me.

Donna

Answer
Hi Donna,
An Audiologist is the professional trained in the evaluation of auditory and balance function and non-medical treatments, e.g., hearing aids.  An Audiologist is also trained to recognize potential problems with hearing that may warrant a referral to an Otolaryngologist, e.g., wax, middle ear infection.  Even if you were to go to the ENT first, s/he would refer you back to the audiologist.

So, unless you notice a change in your hearing or balance issues, e.g., sudden drop in hearing, sudden onset vertigo, you should do well by consulting with the audiologist first for hearing aids.

Hope this helps.
