Question
At the age of 7 I was diagnosed with auditory processing disorder. Since I was younger I really hated noises to me were really loud. They still are, but now it's a little better but still bad. When I got diagnosed at 7 they said I have keen hearing, like a dog. I still do I can hear things people can't. So, my hearing is great. It's just noises to everyone else are whatever kill my ears such as: thunder, plate hitting a plate (lightly or loudly), someone singing or music playing a little too high, fireworks, and that's all that has been going on now. I was wondering if there's something I can get to protect my ears. I saw earplugs and ear headphones and I really don't know what is the best for me. I mean whatever works best let me know but I would really wouldn't want a huge headphone but whatever works well Ill use it. Is there a way to fine what I need without going to an audiologist or should I do that? I haven't been there since I was 7 years old. I really need this.

I am 20 years old now. Thanks in advanced.

Answer
Hi Catherine,
You need a thorough evaluation by both an Audiologist and ENT.  There are many reasons for sound sensitivity, as well as several different types of sound sensitivity. There are also several types of therapy available depending upon the type.  Earplugs, although they can be used, usually are not recommended because they can actually make you more sensitive in the long run.  Most therapy concentrates an adapting to the sounds.

Hope this helps.
