Audiology/Otolaryngology/constant disequilibrium and occasional vertigo

Question
I have been searching for an answer for five years to no avail.  I have had
some tests with my HMO, but their answers are vague.  I have had positional
vertigo sporadically, usually in bed when I turn my head suddenly.  When I
have gone to ENTs, they can not reproduce it.  I have daily disequilibrium with
a feeling that I am rocking.  Sometimes when I lay down, I feel like I am
rocking on a boat.  I am anxious that the vertigo will happen when I am at
work and I am not enjoying my life.  At this point I am willing to go outside
my HMO and pay any amount to figure out what is wrong with me.  I am also
going through menopause and feel dizzy when the hot flashes occur.  I live in
Southern California. The vestibular tests I have had only showed an 18
percent difference in both ears.  Please help.

Answer
Hi Barbara,

At this point, I would make two recommendations. First, consult your OB-GYN regarding the dizziness you experience during the hot flashes.  Although this is not an uncommon experience, s/he may be able to prescribe something to lessen the effects of menopause.

Next, you need to have your ENT/PCP prescribe Vestibular Rehab. Your HMO may or may not pay for this, but it is the next step to help you.

I also refer you to this site of the Vestibular Disorders Association which will provide you with a wealth of information.

Hope this helps.
