Question
Since i was a small child, every time I jump into the water I get a sharp pain in one if not both of my ears.  It is like air stays in the ear until the last minute and then all of a sudden the air rushes out and the water rushes in and hits my ear drum like a water hammer.  It feels like my ear drum explodes and is extremley painfull!!!!!  Ive never thought anything of it other than i try not to jump into the water.  Im getting kinda of tired of it to be honest lol.  Any answer would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Josh,
You need to be evaluated by an ear specialist and have a complete middle ear and audiological evaluation by an audiologist. It sounds as if you may have a Eustachian Tube dysfunction which prevents your ears from maintaining proper pressure when you are underwater.  If you do have ETD, the ENT will be able to present you with various treatment options to help to maintain the proper pressure in your ears and prevent further damage.

Hope this helps.
