Auditing/Accountant filed for Chapter 7

Question
Hello, I am graduating soon and I am feeling very nervous about looking for a job. The reason being is that I filed for chapter 7 due to business failure. I was discharged in September of 2005. I have been able to mantain a perfect credit since then and I already have credit cards and a personal loan which I have paid both on time and has not missed a payment. I know this is going to come up in job interviews but will it prevent me from getting a job in the field?

Answer
Hello Joey,

Congratulations on your graduation.

The issue related to finances will come up right from the beginning when you apply for a job. Many companies today run extensive background checks and these matters must be disclosed.

Although this is bad mark, it should not prevent you for landing a great job if you have the qualifications, people skills, and ability to cope with technology. Be sure to let your prospective employer know what happened. If the only bad feature in your credit history is the Chapter 7, it is likely that you will given an opportunity.

Because there is much at risk, a proactive approach for you should be to discuss this with a attorney. Another suggestion is to speak anonymously with recruiters and ask for their input. They are the ones who truly know how it weights in the hiring process.

Again your past business failure may affect you because people expect that accountants must be very careful with their personal finances to deserve to be entrusted with others' assets, however, full disclosure in advance, diminishes its impact.

I wish you continued success in your professional endeavors.
