Auditing/medical

Question
I have been selected for audit of my 2004 taxes.
One of the things they are requesting is a letter from my physician stating what my medical issues are.

How can this possibly be any business of the IRS?

Answer
I cannot imagine why they would ask for such a thing.  You have every right to question they (or any audit organization) ask for.  You should have them explain the relevance.  If I had to guess, I would guess that your tax return had very high medical deductions they may be in question.  Even so, they should only be asking you to substantiate that they are legitimate deductions.

However, if you are deducting medical expenses for elective procedures (plastic surgery, for example) they may not be deducted.
