Australia/Appropiate location to live in Sydney

Question
Hey Mick,

we`re a couple from South America (41 & 36). We`re going to Sydney in February. I will study a Ph.D at Macquarie University and my wife will study a masters degree at the University of Sydney. We dont have kids, are fairly quiet but like to go out to restaurants, movies, strolls, etc. We´re not very much into parties or noise. But dont want to live in a remote isolated suburb either.

Our budget is tight. We got a couple of scholarships but we`ll have to keep an eye on expenses.

I wonder if you could recommed a few neighborhoods in Sydney where we could live. We`re thinking of a small, one-bedroom one-bathroom flat or small house.

Is a weekly-rent of 200 AUS impossible to get in Sydney?

What would be the best way to look for and find a small place for us?

Saludos !

Juan

Answer
If you don't mind a living where there is a definate gay population, I would check out the Paddington District.  It is near the city center, has lots of activities and some wonderful restaurants.  Check out the Visitors bureau at www.scvb.com.au for general information and the Sydney Morning Herald Newspaper at smh.com.au for rental listings.   I am not familiar with current rental rates.
Good luck, you are about to have a fantastic adventure.
