Australia/Train Travel

Question
We will be spending 1 week in Sydney, then 1 week near Brisbane, then 1 week in Melbourne.  We think it would be best to travel from Sydney to Brisbane by train, then Brisbane to Melbourne by train.  We then need to return to Sydney to catch our flight home.  What is the best way (and fares) to travel between these cities by train, and do you think it would be best to return to Sydney by train or by plane to catch our flight home?  We will be traveling in April 2008.  Any specific information about fares and times of travel would be greatly appreciated!  Thank You!

Answer
Stacy:
There is not a single railroad company that serves all of Australa.  You need to check out those that serve the states where you will be traveling.  Due to constant changes, I don't keep train schedules or fares.  You can find them at www.citytrain.com.au, www.countrylink.nsw.gov.au and www.traveltrain.com.au.  Whether you take the train back to Sydney to catch your flight depends on the train schedule and your flight times.  The overnight train from Melbourne to Sydney is usually a good choice.  Have you considered starting your trip in Melbourne or Brisbane and doing Sydney last?  That will save some money and time.
