Question Frank. My wife and I are visiting Austalia in March 09 and would like to spend some time snorkelling on the reef. We like the look of Heron Island but have been told that the weather could be very unsettled at this time of the year and may spoil our enjoyment. We have a limited budget so would not want to waste it if our resources could be put to something more worthwhile. Any recommendations?

March is at the end of the wet season, and the you can expect some rain at times. However, it is all a bit of luck with the weather.
You are right, Heron Island is beautiful, and is perfect for diving and snorkelling. If you are not prepared to take a risk with the weather, I would suggest you head to Airlie Beach, and explore the magnificent Whitsundays.
You can go diving and snorkelling in the Whitsundays, but there are a lot more activities to do if the weather isn't quite perfect.
