Question Hello Ian, would you please be so kind and let me know how long it takes by
train to travel from Sydney to Brisbane, Melbourne or Canberra? Is it worth
getting out in between? Do you have any fast trains? How much is the fare?
Thank you very much in advance,
Karl Zemann
Answer Simply put, it's 14 1/2 hours to Brisbane, 10 1/2 hours to Melbourne and 4 1/2 hours to Canberra.
There are "fast" trains but nothing like Europe or Japan.
The site to go to is Staterail.com; that will get you all the details with complete timetables etc.
There are some really good specials on at the moment but, again, you'll have to go the the Staterail site as I don't know when you are coming.
As for stopping, that's difficult because it depends what you are interested in. Places like Albury and Coffs have things of interest but your best bet is to go to the aforementioned site and note the stops, then google them up and see if they have anything that interests you.
Hope this has been of help to you and may you have a happy trip.
Cheers, Ian
