As per this site (http://www.immigrationandvisas.com/newzealand/index.htm), Australian permanent residents entering New Zealand with a current Australian resident return visa will be granted a residence permit on arrival.

Also, Also, this site (http://glossary.immigration.govt.nz/VisaFreeCountries.htm) states that Australian citizens and people who hold a current Australian permanent residence visa or a current Australian resident return visa do not need a New Zealand visitor visa to enter New Zealand.
