About Frank Denison
Expertise
I have lived in Brisbane all my life (51 years). I am very proud of our city and the Sunshine State of Queensland. I am happy to help in any way possible. Queensland is a very humid and hot place in Summer, which makes it great for outdoor fun.

Experience
I have a great love and knowledge of Brisbane and the surrounding areas. I holiday on the Sunshine Coast every year, and visit the Gold Coast numerous times during the year for work. We love to dine out, and can recommend many places to try in Brisbane and the Coasts.

Australia - driving from perth to sydney

Expert: Frank Denison - 4/2/2009

Question
Hi Frank, my girlfriend and I are moving to sydney from perth in about 4wks time, she was made redundant, and want to drive across.  My car is a 1997 Toyota Vienta 2.5ltre V6 with about 210k on the clock, it seems to be in good condition and goes well, we took it down to Margaret River with no problems.  I appreciate that the distance we are contemplating are much greater but can you give us some advice on vehicle prep, fuel, water etc.  We are both experienced drivers albeit not in Australia and feel confident that with planning we could do this.  Grateful for any help you can offer, cheers Stew and anne

Answer
Hi Stewart,
I have been to Perth, but have never driven. A few musts for your trip are a pre trip car inspection and service. It will reduce the chances of a breakdown on the way.
I would purchase a detailed map and decide on where you will stay overnight along the way. Make sure you dont rush, and leave plenty of time for rest stops.

The RACQ website has a trip planer which will give you some ideas of driving times. It is a little bit conservative with times, so you would probably do it quicker than what the planner suggests. See link below for the trip planner.

http://www.racq.com.au/travel/trip_planner

Make sure you carry extra water and fuel. The trip is 3935 km's, with long stretches of road, you should be able to average 8 to 9 litres per 100km. I just did a trip Sydney to Brisbane and averaged 6.5litres per 100km, but my car is about 6 months old, so I you may not average that.

If you can get information from a motoring organisation in Perth, they may have some more hints to make your trip as comfortable and safe as possible.

I hope this has helped.

Regards,
Frank
