Question
Hi, im coming over to Australia in December for  year and will be travelling round in a van, I want to be able to use a hairdryer/straightners but im not sure how to do it. can they be run off the car battery? can i buy an inverter when i come over that will work or can i buy the right appliances when i come over that plug into the cigarette lighter, i though i could maybe use a generator? I have duel voltage appliances, can you tell me if there is such a thing as in car hairdryer/straightners or if there is  way i could use mine? Thank you

Answer
In a word, no.  They can't be run off a car battery, you need 240v either off a mains electricity or a generator.  I know this because I have a motorhome with solar etc. and my partner has to do her hair every morning and I have to fire up the generator because the battery stored power is insufficient for the task.
