Australia/Weather or not? ;-)

Question
Hi Frank, and thank you in advance for taking my question. I am determined to achieve a lifelong dream of visiting Australia in three years time, which will also coincide with my 50th birthday. I have many questions, but would like to begin with the time of year that I am looking at for my visit. I have researched this, and discovered conflicting opinions!
I'm an autoworker from Michigan, USA and our factory has an annual two-week shutdown vacation in July. In 2014, which is when I hope to realize this dream, my last day of work will be July 3. Additionally, I have 3 weeks of vacation time to add either before or after this company mandated shutdown. I realize that this is the Aussie winter season, and that southern areas may not be ideal weather wise. However, my plans so far will keep me mostly in the northern area - Cairns, Port Douglas, Darwin, etc...
So! My question: what is your opinion regarding visiting at this time of year? And, should I add my additional 3 weeks before or after July 3, 2014?

Thank you,
Cindy P

Answer
G'day Cindy,
What a great 50th birthday you have planned. There is no way to predict the weather, but if you stick to the northern part of Australia during July, you will still get very warm weather. Darwin does get rain / storm most afternoons, but it is usually short and sharp, lasts only an hour or so.

You will love Cairns and Port Douglas.

I would take the additional time before July 3 2014 if possible.

I am sure you will have a lot of questions, and I am happy to help at anytime. I am just an email away.

Regards,
Frank

I have lived in Brisbane all my life (53 years). I am very proud of our city and the Sunshine State of Queensland. I am happy to help in any way possible. Queensland is a very humid and hot place in Summer, which makes it great for outdoor fun.

Experience

I have a great love and knowledge of Brisbane and the surrounding areas. I holiday on the Sunshine Coast every year, and visit the Gold Coast numerous times during the year for work. We love to dine out, and can recommend many places to try in Brisbane and the Coasts.
