Question I have 2 questions. First, my mini Aussie is about 6 years old. After vigorous exercise (chasing balls, playing soccer), he has trouble breathing, and sounds like he is sort of gasping for breath and wheezing. I think he might have asthma. He also has what seems to be a weak chest ~ if he is hit or pushed in the chest (even lightly), he gasps and coughs quite a bit. He has done this since he was young.
He does not have trouble running with me for distances of up to 5 miles. He only has the trouble breathing when he sprints.
Also, his legs shiver and shake after intense exercise.
Is there something I should be doing, or are either of these problems signs of a serious medical problem?
Answer You should be asking your vet to examine the dog. Exercise intolerance can be caused by many things, including heart disease, lung disease, obesity, and even hip dysplasia. My guess is lung or heart, since the HD would probably only cause the shaking in the hind limbs. Get him a check up.
