Question
Hi Anne,  We have a 11 month Kelpie cross, we got it off th farm when it was 10 weeks old possible, mother and father both working dogs.  We have a problem with ther howling and barking during the day when we are not home.  We have already had one neighbour come and threaten to take care of her for us and I can udnerstand where he is coming from.  But we did tell him we are trying to work on the issue with her.  can you give us any suggestions please.  We ahve thought I using a collar on her but I think that would be a last resort.

Answer
You could try a citronella collar, which does not use electric shock.  But the better method is probably to train her.  Clicker training can help: http://www.clickertraining.com/node/1125
That's a great site and the registration is free.  There's also a product called a "hush muzzle" that you can get, but you really need to pay attention to the safety warnings and correct fitting of the muzzle so that the dog can still pant and drink.
