Australian Shepherds/Grooming

Question
2 days ago, we took our red merle to a groomer. I did not want him shaved becuase I don't like the look, but unfortunately the groomer said they had to because he was so dirty, had dandruff, and very dry hair. He is a farm dog, and gets hosed down about once a month, but bathed only every so often. What kind of shampoo should I use on him, and how often should I bathe him?

Answer
Dandruff, dry hair, and dirt is not usually an excuse to shave a dog unless the dog had parasites or other skin problems.  Mats might be a reason for shaving, however, so ask the groomer to show you how to brush a double coated dog once his hair starts growing back.  Farm dogs have a right to be clean, too, and a bath once a month is preferable to just hosing.  If the dog's coat is dry and flaky, you may want to have the veterinarian draw a full thyroid panel.  A lot of Aussies have hypothyroidism which can affect the coat, and make it less "wash n wear" too.  Thyroid medication is cheap, and it's well worth the testing fees to know about this disorder, because it can lead to seizures and possibly shorten your dog's life.  I like the Ultra Wash Best Shot shampoo and conditioner for my Aussie.  You can get it at Cherrybrook.com.
