Question
Dear Claire.
1 - It was 1970, I was 6 months in Austria. I went with someone on rail toward mountain. Big mountain near rail station. We take cable car uphill. All a way on top of the mountain we were over clouds (I don't know if this was every day phenomena). We walk back. I love it. I don't remember where it was. I think we step on train in Baden, train that was going from Vienna thru Gumpoldzkirchen, Baden and much fodder. (Day trip; rail, cable car, hike).
2 - If you are not able figure it out where it was then perhaps you help me with east half of Austria (is west nicer?). I am not into museums. I am more for fun and everything scenic: - views, roads, lakes, mountains, cities (I am photographer).
3 - I don't understand that in travel industry they don't even like to mention motels. Always hotels. Hotels are to expensive to me (why I need to pay so much for hotel when what I need is bed for 6 hrs, wake up and keep going to someplace else.) Don't know if anything else is cheaper then motels, do they have them in Austria? How much for 1 night?
Please help me as much as you know. Janek

Answer
I apologize, but I do not know what mountain you are talking about. If you are interested in ourdoor activities, you would probably enjoy the western part of Austria more. My experience is more with the cities, but I know that many of the towns in the Alp region would have more outdoorsy activities.
As far as a place to stay, you probably want a hostel. Hostels range in cost depending on what you want. Some offer a bed and nothing more and those can be very cheap. Some offer towels, breakfast and a secure place to leave your larger things during the day. You'll have to ask what exactly you are getting for your money, but those are much cheaper than hotels.
Just now I used this website to search hostel costs and I found many options for 30 euros or less. http://www.hostelworld.com/
I hope this helps you!
