Austria - Baby in Vienna

Expert: Abellio - 3/18/2009

Question
Hi! We are planning to travel to Vienna for a few days this spring with our 5 month old baby. I would need some information.
Is it possible to access the most common tourist attractions with baby stroller or should be try to cope without?
Is it legal in Austria to travel in taxi without safety seat for the baby? The seat is very inconvenient to take with while traveling.
Are there any non-smoking restaurants available or is it possible to smoke everywhere? It would be great to find smokeless places to go with the baby.

Answer
Hi Anne,

usually you can take your baby stroller with you when visiting museums and the like. In museums just ask to take your bag with the baby-stuff with you instead of checking it at the coat check, that shouldn't be a problem either.

It is legal to carry children without safety seat in taxis in Austria, and taxis don't provide them.

The smoking ban in bars and restaurants is in effect since January 1st 2009, so bars and restaurants should be smokefree, or at least have separate areas for smokers and non-smokers. However, there is a transitional solution in effect, which means some bars and restaurants still are neither smokefree nor have separate seatings (and some just don't care, unfortunately). In short: You should have no problem finding smokefree restaurants, but there are still smokers restaurants.

Please feel free to ask additional questions if need be, and have a nice trip to Vienna.

Regards,

Mario
