Austria/Inexpensive lodging in Vienna

Question
My husband & I will be in Vienna from 12/22 - 12/25 (heading to Salzburg on 12/25).  I am looking for inexpensive accomodations in Vienna (less than $80/night) in a central location (we won't have a car).  It would be nice if the place included a good breakfast & had non-smoking rooms, but those are not requirements.

Also - I have gotten some referrals on hotels on Seilergasse 9 (Neuer Markt); Rotenturmstrabe 1 (Pension Sacher)and Krugerstrasse 11 (Hotel Zur Weiner Staatsoper)- which of these are better hotels/locations to stay in?

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hello Amy,

For the referrals you got, I would have to say that the Pension Sacher would be the best location since it is right at the heart of the city center and Stefansdom.  I had actually booked an apartment at the Pension Sacher last year but was unfortunately not able to go but it seems very nice.  The area at the Wiener Staatsoper is also very convenient to the subways and the streetcar that goes around the Ring.  Pretty much anywhere in Vienna is convenient to public transportation since they have an excellent street car, subway and bus system that runs very regularly so you never have to wait long.

Another convenient hotel to stay about 2 minutes from the Stefansdom for about $83 is the Hotel Post at Fleischmarkt 24.  I stayed at this hotel my first time in Vienna and the buffet breakfast was very good and convenient to the subway line as well.  A little higher priced around $90 is the Pension Pertschy at Habsburggasse 5 and it is also very near Stefansdom.

A very good website on Vienna which lets you search and book hotels is www.info.wien.at/welcome.html

I hope this helps you out and have fun there!  I just returned on Monday and the Christmas markets were fun.

I lived in Vienna for 3 months and know many good places to visit, places to rent apartments for a short period of time and how to easily get around the different districts in the city.
