Austria/Telephone calls

Question
My daughter will be spending time in Austria this summer.  She has never been to Europe (nor have I).  Can you tell me how she would go about making a phone call back to the United States from Austria?  I know this sounds like a simple question, but she is really worried about it.

Answer
Hi Robert

Making a phone call from Austria is simple.  Your daughter can either buy a phone card for 50, 100, or 200 schilling and then use it until it runs out, or else she can get a calling card from AT and T or another international phone company and they will provide her with a telephone number which will connect her directly with the States.  She could also call from someone's home phone, in which case she only needs to dial 001 before the regular area code and number.  She could then pay someone back for the use of their home phone.  Probably the easiest is to contact your phone company and get information about a calling card.  This way the bill will be sent to the States and can be paid in US dollars.  I hope this helps and that you daughter has a great time.

I am a Canadian living in Burgenland in Austria. I have been here for two and a half years and have travelled extensively in eastern Austria. I am particularly familiar with Burgenland and Steirmark. This is not a particularly touristed area, which is a shame because these two provinces are some the most beautiful and hospitable regions in Austria. Lots of insider information to share!

Experience

I have lived in Kapfenberg and Mattersburg over the past two and a half years.
