Question My wife and I will be in Vienna for 3 days in October. We have never been there and have interests in art, museums, galleries... Do you have any suggestions of things to see and do there?
Thanks
Answer Vienna has one of every kind of art museum. The Kunsthistorishes museum has a great collection of renaissance and Baroque stuff. The Belvedere has a similar collection. The Albertina is more modern art. Schonbrunn is a beautiful palace that has been restored and furnished just as it was during the height of the Empire - and also has great gardens.
I recommend that you visit one of the open air markets. There is a large one in the 4th district. Get on the subway(U4 green line) and get off at Kettenbruckengasse. The market is called the Naschtmarkt.
Of course, you may have a chance to experience some of the Oktoberfest mania. You should eat in a typical Viennese restaurant. Get Vienerschnitzel, potatoes and beer. Vienerschnitzel can be veal, turkey or chicken. Finish with a strudel.
The last thing you should do is just walk. Vienna is actually a rather small city. Take the U1 red line to Schwedenplatz and walk to the city center. Walk around the Hofburg palace. It is a beautiful city. I hope you enjoy it. Let me know if you have any more questions.
