Question My wife and I are flying to Munich on the last weekend of Sept. and fly home from Geneva 2 weeks later. Our first 3 nights are in Munich and then we plan on taking a train to Bad Ischl for two nights so that we can see Halstatt and Gosau. We then plan on taking the train to Innsbruck for 3 nights but without a car I'm not sure if that makes sense. Our trip ends up with 2 nights in Interlaken and 3 nights in Geneva. Is this something that can all be done by train? I thought we'd be renting a car for portions of the trip but all cities are connected by trains and the scenic day trips seem to be available by bus or cable car. Also, is 3 days in Innsbruck too long without a car?
Answer German/Austria trains are very well organized and timely. I recommend that you use them for most of your travel. You can get around Innsbruck either on foot, in a cab or by using their bus system. If you plan to ski, there are buses that will take you up into the mountains. You could probably find plenty of things to do in Innsbruck for 3 days. You might be a little travel tired by then also, so a relaxing few days of simple city walking may be nice.
