Autism/16 mo. old

Question
I'm concerned about my 16 mo old son; He seems to be developing typically, interacts with us normally, no odd behavior... However, what concerns me is his loss of words.  He said "More, Hot, Hug" at 13-14 mo. and no longer says them.  I do repeat them daily, and hope he says them again.  His language is not very recognizable... He has a dozen words but lately has been pointing to things and trying to get my attention to something but uses the same sound for everything.  When I realize what he wants I tell him the word but I don't see any improvement... Shouldn't he eventually try to sound out the word I say instead of always saying "qua"
What he likes to do now is play with the kitchen area and make food, bring me a drink, try to put puzzles together, bring things to my husband and I and he loves to bring me books so that I can read them.  I don't know but something in my gut is worrying me sick. If you can give me any advice... I've called his ped and they told me to call for early intervention... I haven't gone yet but I want to know what your opinion would be?

Answer
Hi Maria;

It doesn't sound like autism based on what you have shared thus far. It does sound like an expressive language delay and you should keep your appointment with the Early Intervention folks. With regressive type autism skills are usually lost around the age of three and it's dramatic.
