Subject: important question about autism and public schools
Question Hi, I have a 5 yr old autistic son and having lots of problems getting school services he needs and deserves. I removed him from school after he came home one day full of bruises that the school says he did to himself. I have been homeschooling him since August and have not seen any of the problems they were seeing. He has OT and Speech at home and they have not seen these problems either. I really need to find out what my rights are as a parent to make the schools listen and put him in a class that is right for him. Please help!!!!!
Thanks, autismmom
Answer I have a free powerpoint on our website for parents entitled Parent Rights in Special Education on www.anniebooks.com. Also, Wrightslaw.com is a wonderful site to further your knowledge regarding special education law and parent rights. Asking for a functional behavior assessment (by the school psychologist), may help you to understand any sensory issues that may be causing his frustration as well as positive behavioral support suggestions for the classroom. Let me know if I can be of more help, or answer more specific questions. Have a lovely day and good luck!
