Question
I have 7 year old nephew that has been diagnosed with PPD-NOS.  He is in his 2nd year of kindergarten and seems to be going backwards.  He won't eat much other than bread and milk.  I am at a loss because I see he is not getting any help.  He's parents I think are having a hard time with it all.  I want to know what to do, should he be tested again?  Lately he has been having headaches, loss of some speech, and is remembering things that happened last year like they just happened yesterday.
Please Help.

Answer
It would be a good idea to discuss all of these concerns with his physician, in that other conditions can cause headaches, stomach upset, and memory concerns.  You might suggest that the school provide a functional behavioral analysis with a positive behavioral/educational support plan to determine what is causing the backslide, and how he may be best supported in the educational environment.  It is not uncommon for children on the spectrum to be picky eaters.  You may suggest that his mother check with the school's occupational therapist to provide suggestions for a sensory diet, and ways to reduce olfactory or gustatory reactivity (resistance to smells and/or textures in the mouth.)  Please let me know if I can be of more assistance.
