Autism/3-month old arching her head and back

Question
Dear James. Thank you for taking my question. My daughter is 3.5 months old and since she was a newborn has often slept on her side with her head arched backward. She was diagnosed with reflux based on this, as well as frequent spitting up and respiratory symptoms (panting, gasping, snorting, etc.). Around age 2.5 months she also started arching her head and back at other times, for example, when she is waking from sleep (and feeling distressed), while on her playmat or changing table, and sometimes while being held on our laps or upright over the shoulder (currently seems to prefer being held facing outward, used to prefer over the shoulder). Also, when she falls asleep in my arms and I lay her down, she will sometimes immediately roll to her side and arch her back, other times she may not do it at all. when she's awake and on her playmat she will play on her back for a long period before arching, on her changing table she rarely does it, only usually when she's upset or fussy.

At times i think she is just trying to roll over, or experiencing reflux or belly pain, but I've read so much conflicting information about this "symptom" related to autism and cerebral palsy and i'm a first time parent and really concerned. my pediatrician feels that since she is otherwise developing normally that there is nothing to worry about--in particular she kept asking "does she smile at you and interact with you, does she allow you to hold her" and she definitely does. However, i can't stop worrying, and if there is an issue i'd like to take any steps to help her as soon as possible.

Simply lookng for any insight you may have, do you perhaps recommend a second opinion? Much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Jodi;

I would not worry either. There is no association between arching of the back and autism. I agree with your pediatrician. I would contact the Early Intervention program at your school district through the special education department. They will evaluate your daughter at no cost and provide occupational therapy if there are any motor problems.

Kind regards,
James
