Question
Hi James
I'm the mom to 14 mo old twins. I have one of each. My son is already saying Mama and Dada and ball. I have concerns about my daughter though. She makes consonant sounds but does not use words. When she sees our cat it sounds like she tries to say kitty, but it comes out gii. She makes plenty of meaningful gestures like pointing clapping waving etc. She will also engage with us as well as her brother. I'm very concerned about her not using any words though. She also growls alot. Should I be concerned about autism or maybe a speech delay? They were born at 35 weeks. Any advice would be helpful! Thanks! Erica

Answer
Hi Erica;

I would not worry at all about autism. If you live in the U.S., call the special education department in your school district and tell them you want to refer her to their Early Intervention program. The assessment is free as well as therapy if she qualifies. By the way...congratulations on your family!

Kind regards,
James
