QuestionQUESTION: my grandson is 7 years old and has no thryiod gland takes thryroxin. He developed rather well considering this but now he seems to have slowed down in his mentality. He seems to have the mental age of 4 years old. we are very concerned and think he could have autism or aspergers?
ANSWER: Hi Elayne;
I'll need more information about his behavior. Can you describe him in more detail? Also, what country are you in?
Kind regards,
James

QUESTION: hiya, i am in England.His behaviour can be very erratic,he can be good and do as you ask but on the whole he can be difficult. Its as if he shuts off when you talk to him Also as of late we have had issues with him at school and it doesnt seem to register when he is told about being naughty. his mind seems blank. He can only read basic words and can hardly write.
ANSWER: Hi Elayne;
Has he been assessed yet by your school's psychologist?
Kind regards,
James

QUESTION: Yes he has a little, they are giving him a couple of hours a week on a one to one basis, but thats it as far as they are concerned. Help is very diffuclt to get here.We are due to see his consultant for a check up next month would it be worth mentioning it to her.It seems because he has no thyriod gland then thats the end of.
AnswerHi Elayne;
I still don't have enough information to comment on autism/Asperger's syndrome. If there is any doubt, then you should have him evaluated as soon as possible.
If you like, you can download the Australian Scale for Asperger's syndrome at:
http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/aspergerscaleAttwood.html
Complete the scale, scan it and email it to me at: roanpsych@gmail.com
I will then be better able to comment.
Kind regards,
James
