Question my son just turned 3. he makes very broad statements. and likes to spin and spin and spin. he doesn't interact with children besides his sister or my self. if he is doing something and someone messes with it or changes it he gets very upset and starts crying. if you ask him to do something he don't want to do he runs off and starts crying. his speech is delayed. i am very confused on what to do. he didn't start walking till he was almost 2. he only says short phrases.he won't let anyone interact with me. even his sister unless she is crying. he always has his blanket at least in the same room with him. he was born with a cyst in his brain and i was told that it don't look like the type that could affect him. but know i am not sure could that cyst of hurt my child. i have been trying to research autism but can't find anything a bout it in 3 year olds.and what to look for if anyone can help me i would appreciate it.
Answer Jennifer,
You need to have your son diagnosed by a medical doctor familiar with pediatric autism. This is not something parents or advocates can diagnose. In most states there is help available -- in some cases even diagnostic help. Contact your state mental health department. Also the school your son will attend when he gets older can help you by directing you to where to go for help. You could start with the doctor that treated him for the cyst in his brain.
From your description, there are other possibilities other than autism for his behaviors. What ever he has, it sounds like he needs professional help.
I wish you and your son the best,
