Autism/Getting tested for Aspergers

Question
Hi Paul

I have a 6 year old son who has HFA.  He was first labeled by the school district at age 3.  Since that time, I have been wondering if I too am also on the spectrum. I spend a lot of time meeting my son's needs, and have limited time to look into getting myself tested.  As the years go by, I think knowing could be very helpful for myself and for my son as he matures.  Could you give me an idea on where to go for testing and just what is usually involved?

Thanks! I live south of the Twin Cities.

Answer
Hey Kat,

Thank you for your important question. The short answer to your question is that you might be best served by going to the Autism Society of Minnesota for an assessment. It might be a bit of a trip but this is where you will receive your most accurate assessment.

Your question is not what I was struck by in your message.
Your child was sufficiently symptomatic for him to receive an ASD
diagnosis. And now you are wondering about being on the spectrum your self? Why? What makes you curious as to your own membership on the spectrum. Simply having an ASD child should not be enough to seek a diagnosis. This was not included in your question?

I believe having a reason to be tested would be more satisfying when you get the test results. Thus you would know how you are prepared to use that information.
