Autism/Am I autistic?

Question
I have wondered for several years if I might be on the spectrum. I found school very difficult and was often labelled as weird. Ifound it hard to focus on my work as even the noise of other people writing would distract me. I would become so absoarbed in an activity I enjoyed that I would not hear or notice what was going on around me. I find social interaction terrifying and tend to turn to alcohol to bolster my confidence. I find it impossible to make friends and avoid going out at all whenever i'm not at work. Is there a chance I might be on the spectrum.

Answer
Hey Rebecca,

Thank you for your important and interesting question.

I have been increasing struck be the amount of sensory aspects of us on the spectrum. I do not have strong sensory sensitivies, however I have been told by many individuals on the spectrum that has struggled in this area. The Diagnostic maunual for Psychiatrist does not use this criteria for their diagnosis but I see it as just as important as any symptom there is for AS.

Your description of your self would be described as a social phobia.
However being phobic of people is clearly an aspect of Asperger's Syndrome.

Given the degree of struggles you have suffered from I am surprised that you have maintained a job. I think there is no doubt you might be on the spectrum. You might want to contact the Autism Society of your state.

Give me an update on how this goes for you.
