Autism/6 month old boy

Question
"My son is six months and has been developing normally since birth. But I notice he does this hand flapping (from wrist moves them up and down)when he gets excited. I also noticed he shifts his arm behind him when he does it. Also I noticed that he does this wrist and finger movement together when he is sitting alone he also tightens up a little and moves his feet when he does this. I've noticed other autistic children do this so this is why I'm worried.

He is developing wonderfully, loves cuddling, very playful, makes good eye contact answers to name, sits up unsupported, laughs and plays, moving on his belly, and when placed on all fours he tries to move. The doctor told me not to worry, but I'm a first time mother and I have worked with autistic children for 5 years. So I know the common movements among them, which my son is displaying. Am I worrying for nothing, is it too early to diagnose. Are these common movements for an infant exploring the world. Because I've never seen infants do what my son is doing, and I've been around children my whole life (very big family). Please help"

Answer
Did your Dr see the movement? Maybe you can take some video of it and show it to someone? I don't think I would be really worried, but certainly keep an eye on things. It sounds like he is developing well, ie: makes good eye contact and answering to his name. These are the most important things that you mentioned. I would be looking to see if he starts talking a bit by the time he is 12-16 months. Keep an eye on things and keep me in the loop. If you start seeing something else that worries you, let me know. I can always do an observation over the Internet through live streaming video on Skyppe.
