Answer
Hi Darci,

I wouldn't be overly concerned just yet but I would certainly keep an eye on it.  While these types of mannerisms are common in children with autism, they are also common in premature babies and in babies who are sensory defensive.  Those who are sensory defensive sometimes require services and in others, the sensory obstacles fade away as the baby matures.  Your baby is still so young that I doubt a top professional could give you any specific answers.  Let your pediatrician know your concerns.  If your baby is still doing this by the time he is 12 months old, I would revisit the issue, and get an evaluation from Early Intervention.

Try not to worry about it.  Easier said than done, I know!  But it's very possible that it's nothing to be concerned about at all.  Does your baby respond to his name?  Does he make eye contact?  Is he interactive?  Does he like simple games, like Peek-a-boo and Pat-a-cake?  Is he making sounds?  As he grows he should start pointing to things, bringing you things and show interest in your reactions.  Autism is a social disorder, so these are the things to watch out for.  Most people would not have paid much attention to these mannerisms but you are obviously a very caring mom and way ahead of the game!

Try to relax and enjoy playing with your baby.
