Question
Hi,

I just read a thread about autism, between you and some lady call Sheryl about her son and her suspicions of autism.  I would like to know how theyre doing.  My son has exactly what hers was goig tru.  Mine was talking and developing at a normal pace till feb 09 when he had a really bad fever. Since then he just babbles a lot, stopped talking, he was depressed for a while.  Now he is a happy baby again but it looks like he has language comprehension issues.  If you can give me any insight.  He is also going tru early intervention, getting therapy once a week etc.

ill appreciate anything u can tell me.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Nelly,

I've been looking through my past answers but couldn't find a question from a person called Sheryl (probably I've missed it though).
I also usually don't keep in touch with people who ask questions here (unless they write again to ask another question), so I wouldn't know how her son's doing today.

Have you seen a doctor (GP)with your son to detect any long term damage the fever may have done ?

I googled autism and fever and came up with alot of results stating that fevers can alleviate the symptoms of autism (which I can say nothing about, as I don't think I *ever* had a fever in my whole live (certainly not as a teenager or adult), only maybe as a small kid which I don't remember, so I can't say if this is any true or not).

One article described something about a genetic mitochondrial condition which may lead to autitic symptoms after the body of the child was stressed from a fever (caused by vaccines in that case). However, I'm tired and couldn't really process much of what I read, so that's just my very vague syllabus of that article (please go and red it for yourself here if you're interested -->http://www.ageofautism.com/2008/05/david-kirby-fev.html).

Anyway, probably this fever has just put alot of stress on his body, and he just needs a while to recover. Have you had his ears checked ? In case some ear infections were involved he may have become hard of hearing and therefore have language comprehension issues.

I would strongly recommend talking to your doctor about all of this.

I'm sorry I can't really help with this question (also sorry about bad grammar/spelling, I really struggle with language and processing what I read (even when I'm trying to read what I've just written myself...) tonight)
C.

Therefore I cannot answer questions like "is my child autistic ?" other than by telling you to go and see a specialist

Please be aware that if you are in the US it will usually take at least 24 hours until I can answer your question, as I'm in Europe and don't have access to my email during the day. I also cannot answer questions concerning the US educational or law system (other than by looking up things on google, but that's probably not the expertise you need), as I'm not in the US.

Please also be aware that I'm a person with autism. My answers may sometimes be very blunt and direct and I may tell you things you won't like to hear. Diplomacy is certainly not among my talents. I'm never being rude on purpose, and I always try not to hurt or offend people, but it has happened before and may happen again. It's NEVER on purpose. I just want to help.
=======================================================================

What I *can* do for you is gather information on any aspect of autism and therapy of autism you're interested in and give you my personal oppinion about it (if you want to hear it) or, if it applies, tell you about my personal experience. I can answer all questions about what life is like for an autistic person.

I can also answer questions asked in German or French (but will have to answer in English to questions asked in French as my French is a bit rusty).

Ich beantworte gerne auch Fragen auf Deutsch.

Vous pouvez poser des questions en Francais, si cela ne vous dérange pas que je responds en anglais.

Experience

As I'm not doing well right now and am not in the shape of answering questions well - I recieved a few low ratings lately - I'll take a break from AllExperts for the next few weeks/until I'm doing better

I am an adult diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome/High Functioning Autism and ADD.

In the past years I have also read a lot about autism and its comorbid conditions and related subjects (as I am experiencing symptoms of most of these or know others who do) , so I have accumulated a lot of layman knowledge in this area (AD(H)D, Tourette's Syndrome, OCD, sleep disorders, allergies, sensory integration dysfunction, learning difficulties, left/right-brain, giftedness, Irlen Syndrome, prism glasses, executive dysfunction (aka. "inertia"), "special" diets).

Education/Credentials
None in the field of autism, apart from being autistic myself !
