Autism - Violent reactions to other children and teachers

Expert: James Michael Roan - 6/1/2009

Question
My 7 year old daughter has just been suspended from school again for her violent reaction to another child who was trying to help pack away, but more her then physical assault on her teacher who stepped in to stop her doing more halm. What can I do? She is a really nice loving and affectionate child I have spent a small fortune seeking help from Dev Ped and psychologists and this outburst of violence only seems to happen at school and now at soccer but is always provoked. It is not that she hits its how badly and how over the top her reactions are? I want to help solve the problem and treat the cause but am lost. Her diet is excellent little or no junk, mostly vegetarian and unprocessed. She was diagnosed with ODD but only really to help get support in the school, because I had not witnessed this behaviour myself until recently. I now help coach her soccer team and have witnessed this aggression or violence towards others first hand.

Answer
Hi Sonia;

Delayed development of the executive functions is generally the culprit behind poor emotional and behavioral regulation. I'll need more information. Do you have a current evaluation and are you willing to let me review it? If so, scan and email to me roanpsych@gmail.com.

Are you suspecting Asperger's syndrome?

Kind regards,
James
