Question Hey,My boy is 3 years of age, hav delayed speech but can sing a whole stanza copied from television as he is a fun, very senstive to sounds covers ears, has eye contact to known people, Doctors in Kenya had diagonised him mild autistic, later sensory Integration Dyfunction and third Hyperactive, now am confused. Kindly advice
Answer Hi Margaret,
Many people with a diagnosis of autism also have sensory integration dysfunction and are hyperactive with difficulty in focusing. It almost goes hand in hand. In the USA, typically one diagnosis would be given, "Autism" which naturally incorporates the other two.
From the very little you've said for example your son "has delayed speech but can sing a whole stanza copied from television" is very typical to children with autism. You can actually use this skill to your son's advantage. As he gets older, he will use this technique for conversation skills, by watching what other people say and how they interact.
I think an article you will find very helpful is called "How do you know if your child has autism?" You can find it at this link and I think it might clarify some things for you. http://www.nlconcepts.com/autism-howdoyouknow.htm
The best thing to do right now is to help your son with all his challenges such as sensory issues, speech and communication. You are just in the beginning of the road but you will be amazed at how much progress your son will make.
