Autism/17 month old son

Question
hello,
At the moment we are very concerned about our 17 month old son. He still does not talk not a single word other than babbling, and doesn't always respond to whatever we ask him to do. like he will clap his hands, but he will not wave or get me a ball or any other object when asked. he doesn't distinguish between who is mum and dad when asked, like if i tell him kiss papa he will kiss me not his dad. he seems to hear well when i call his name he turns, and he likes to hear his favourite songs. he has good eye contact, likes to play with other children and with his toys. he is also very loving. when he wants something he will come near me take me to the place of interest than asks me to lift him up and point at what he wants but than there are other times when like if his ball goes under the sofa he tries to get it alone. if he doesn't manage he will just continue to play with something else and doesn't call me to get it for him.

should i be worried about autism? (i am extremely worried cannot sleep at night)
thanks for your help i really appreciate.

Answer
Hi Malta

It's time to get your son checked out. He's late with the speech, but more importantly, he isn't processing language appropriately. Also, the fact that he has to get you to show you what he wants is an issue.I don't diagnose autism, but I can tell you he is late developing in certain areas.

One thing, I would highly recommend that he start immediately on a picture card system to help him learn to communicate appropriately. This system will also help him learn to speak. You may want to learn more about this. If you do, let me know.

Don't worry-just get busy. He needs help and early intervention is the key.
