Question
My son was singing his ABC's then song them backwards. At first I was surprised then I became a little upset, because I feel knowing his ABC's backward or the fact he even being taught that is not helpful or what purpose does it serve when he can't identify all the ABC's or count 1-50 or identify them,or write his name or any letter for that matter.Want to know, what's a 1st. grade child who's autistic/mild autism should be taught in school and or is there a lesson plan?

Answer
I suggest that you talk with your son's teacher to find out her/her reasoning for doing this. You should also ask her/him about the curriculum. Kids do need variety and challenge. Just working on his ABC's, in correct order, and his numbers can get very boring. I can't really tell you what he could be working on because I have not done a case review. I would need to know a great deal more about your son before I could help you any more. Things like functional age, academic achievement level, knowledge, cognitive ability, and much more. My first step with each new client is performing a detailed case review.
