Autism/Autism symptom in 15 month old

Question
QUESTION: Hi Valerie,
I have a 5 year son with aspergers. I also have a 15 month old baby. My 5 year old had his review appointment with his consultant today and she asked about my 15 month olds development. I said he was completely different, really social, happy smiley baby, really interactive, however one thing I notice is he likes to spin on occassion. She was concerned about this and indicated spinning was not normal in a 15 month old. Is this the case? I have noticed him tip toe walk on occassion. As I say I can't notice anything else bar he is very different to my other son at that age, he is always hugging and looking for affection and smiles at strangers. The consultant indicated that he could develop autism yet, does this mean it could be an early sign. I am worried a little.
Many thanks in advance for your answer.
Maureen

ANSWER: Hi Maureen
There is no doubt that children who have siblings on the spectrum run the risk of having some issues themselves. Your baby is not only spinning but walking on his tiptoes. These are signs of a sensory issue that is related to spectrum disorders. You didn't mention whether your baby is talking yet. Write me back and let me know that.

QUESTION: Hi Valerie,
Thanks for getting back so quickly. He has some words, not much although he is only 15 months. He says Mama and Daddy, ann for Ryan, Bird, Dog, uh when he points to what he wants. He makes a set of sounds that sound like I love you when he hugs us, which is what we say to him. They are not clear though.
Thanks
Maureen

Answer
Hi Maureen

Well-that's a good beginning. Keep your eye on him closely. If anything starts to look like autism or a sensory-based issue, go for early intervention.

My eldest son did not have autism, but he was speech delayed and had a lot of sensory and social issues. I was able to work with him at an early age and he is doing well. (20 years old, graduating college and going for a PhD in psychology. Late social developer, but now has a girlfriend and lots of friends. Some anxiety issues.)

My youngest has autism-full blown

I have worked with many families who have siblings with autism and other issues. So keep a vigilant eye out on the baby as he develops
