Question
I have two beautiful boys, my ten year old son was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome when he was 3 years old, my concerns are for my 13 month old son, he cries alot, he does'nt point to things that he wants, he wakes up from his sleep every night bright eyed and bushy tailed!, and when my husband or I put our hands out to lift him he does'nt lift his arms, it's like he does'nt know what we're doing. What are the chances of him having ASD?

Answer
Hi there, Shauna!

There hasn't been enough studies to be able to give exact numbers, unfortunately, though what studies there *have* been are indeed pointing to some genetic links with Asperger's and other ASDs. Autism does tend to run in families, so if you have suspicions of it with your present child, then having an expert (as opposed to just the word of an AllExpert) assess him would likely be an idea. If your son has been diagnosed, then that suggests you are in contact with a doctor, and though at 13 months your other may be a bit too young for a full diagnosis, you can at least potentially get some checks done for your own comfort!

Hopefully I was able to answer your question. As usual, questions, comments, feedback, follow-ups are welcome!

Expertise

My primary expertise is in the area of the social, psychological, and mental development of Aspergers Syndrome and other high-functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorders. I am also very knowledgeable in the communication disorders and common co-existing issues. I'm well-read on most of these as well as having experienced it myself. Other aspects of autism, I can do fairly well at as well, from the oversensitivity to the recognition of it. Warning: I am *not* a medical professional, and while I can research answers through books and online, I can not give direct medical expertise.

Experience

I am 19 years diagnosed Asperger's Autistic, and have been reading up and studying it, as well as taking 'first hand accounts' for most of those 14 years. In addition, I have had three children, adopted elsewhere, all of whom are varying degrees of autistic from mid to high functioning. My mother has done some research on the subject as well, and passed some of it on to me.

Education/Credentials
I have completed grade school and most of high school, and achieved a GED. I've also received home schooling.
