Autism/autism

Question
My nephew now age two and one half was developing normal {walking , talking, playing, etc.} until he reached the age of about 20 months. He stopped talking and began acting indifferent to everyone including his parents. He seems to know what he wants and demands in his own way by hollering, crying, or making noises. This all started shortly after he had four immunizations in one doctor visit and a move from my house to their own place. Could either of these things or a combination cause such a drastic change in his behavior? Can a normal baby develop autism or could he have other problems.

Answer
Unfortunately, Marilyn, most children with autism are born normal and then develop autism around the age of two or before, so your nephew's situation is the norm rather than the exception. I would really have him checked out because the regression could be a sign of autism. I can't tell you about the immunizations as it is quite controversial, though there are many parents who say their child began to regress after the shots. Hopefully, one day we will know the answer to that question. Meanwhile, he needs to see a developmental pediatrician and figure out what is going on. Then he needs communication training. Tell his parents that if they have any concerns, they can always email me at: info@valerieherskowitz.com

Good luck!
