Question
My sister takes care of my Autistic son everyday. Is there a program where the state of California will pay her to be a caregiver?

Answer
Amber,
In California, we have Regional Centers, which are state funded non-profits that coordinate services to children with disabilities, such as Autism. If the child your sister cares for is a  "customer" of the local Regional Center, then it is a matter of the child's parents requesting services for their child. Regional Center can make provisions for one of their vendors to provide home car for the child. The parents can ask the vendor to hire your sister to be the care giver. Then she will be paid by the vendor.

If the child is not being served by Regional Center, then the parents need to schedule an intake evaluation by their local Regional Center.

There are many services available to Autistic children both through their school district and Regional Center. One of the big ones is behavior services where trained behaviorists come to the home and work with the Autistic child. This service is very important.

I represent many Autistic (as well as other disabled) children to Regional Centers and school districts.
