Autism/Toddler Autism

Question
Hi,

What are the calssic signs of autism in a toddler?  The internet is full of misinformation, so I wanted an experts opinion.

Is lack of eye contact usually present in most autistic toddlers?

Is lack of social skills usually present in autistic toddlers?

I am asking because my son makes great eye contact, is social, happy, loving, speaks many words, etc., but I have been worried here and there because of occasional hand flapping. When I ran it by the dr. she said that if it was shown with emotion, it was normal for this age.  He also plays with his cars a lot, so I was concerened because he always seemed to be carrying one around.

As a parent you worry when you here that there are kids with autism who make eye contact and are social.  I usually have heard the opposite, so I am really confused.

Thanks so much.

Answer
From what you describe, your son sounds typical for a toddler. I agree with your doctor - many, if not most toddlers will flap their arms or hands at times. And, many toddlers carry around their favorite toys.

You are right when you say that there are kids with autism who do make eye contact and who are social although socialization is usually a problem area. I understand your concern, though.

First Signs is a great website that talks about the Red Flags for autism at http://www.firstsigns.org/concerns/flags.htm If you look through this list, it does not seem to fit the child you describe in your question above. The First Signs site also has an excellent video glossary at http://www.firstsigns.org/asd_video_glossary/asdvg_about.htm You need to register before you can see them but it's free and there is not obligation and you won't be contacted by anyone. The videos show typically developing children of varying ages along side their peers who have autism spectrum disorders.

I think these might put your mind at rest. Keeping in touch with your doctor is a good idea if you have any worries.

Best wishes to you and your family,
