Question
I have a daughter who just turned 3. I was concerned about her speech (only talking in 1 or 2 word sentences) and her understanding (doesn't seem to understand all we say to her) so I made appt with pediatrician. She set up testing with therapists and such and they have informed me they think it's autism. I'm not so sure because she loves to cuddle, is social, loves people, etc.  She does exhibit other autism characteristics like biting herself, lining up toys, repeating words over and over and wanting us to, not wanting a change in routine, etc.  My question is can a toddler have autism and be social? She also makes eye contact.  Thank you.

Answer
Oh yes! It's really a myth that people with autism are not ever in the need of lots of love and cuddles. From your description, it does seem like your daughter has pretty classical characteristics of autism: Language delay, biting, lining up things, repeating, having issues with change. Right now, focus on communication and setting up some transition devices so that she can handle her life. It's good that she is speaking-that's a positive sign.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.
