Autism/PreK Problems

Question
My daughter is 4 yr old with Autism in an ESE PreK program throught the local elementary school.  Her teacher told me that as of last my daughter has mastered the PreK curriculim and her IEP for the year.  But because of her age, they can't do anything when it comes to advancing her education.  I am wondering if there is anything I can do to or say to the school district to help my daughter with her education being stalled.

Answer
-- Kimberly,

Under the law, the school district is required to offer a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that meets your daughter's unique needs. It does not say they can state what they are telling you. If their program can't meet her needs, then they either have to develop a program that does or find one in another school (public or private) that does. Her age does give them an argument, but I believe they still have to serve her given she is on an IEP. You should call for an IEP to discuss how they are proposing to meet your daughter's needs.

I wish you and your daughter the best,
