Question
Son age 43 has more aspergers than add, diagnosed after years of neuro testing. Smart, usually focusing on his electronic interests. Workspasty time but can't totally support himself. Luckily we Can help out.  Looking for therapist, group or life coach to help him feel more confident, feel good successes, & help guide him to figure out his best talents & then try to get job in that area. He always gets past interviews having learned to cope socially enough. But loses jobs from tardiness, temper, or asking too many questions, etc. any ideas?

Answer
Hey Dee Dee,

Thank you for your personal and interesting question.

You did not say when your son was diagnosed. I am left to assume he was an adult when he was diagnosed. He falls in to a broad group where most adult Aspies reside. We have nearly a 90% unemployment or underemployment rate.

I am in agreement with many Autism experts that his vocational opportunities will likely stem from his special interest. This is the subject area where he is an expert and loves to study. However maintaining and keeping a job is a major challenge. I am currently conducting research to help us be able to do this. I would like to meet with him and we can talk about what works best in terms of treatment; counseling or job coaching.
